The Singapore Prize is a series of awards, medals and prizes including cups, trophies, bowls, badges, state decorations and other adornments awarded in Singapore. It was first established in 1995 to recognise outstanding businesses who have contributed to the economic development of Singapore and around the world.
The prizes are given out by the Government of Singapore, based on recommendations made by a panel of experts. The winners are honoured at a gala dinner in the presence of the Prime Minister of Singapore. Some of the winners have also been granted honorary degrees by the University of Singapore.
As of February 2024, the highest earner of prize money in Dota 2 tournaments held in Singapore is Daryl Pei Xiang Koh, known by his player ID iceiceice, with a total earning of around 1.8 million U.S dollars in prize money from various online and offline competitions. The runner-up is Jeng Yih Wong, known as NutZ, with a total winnings of around 231 thousand U.S dollars from the same online and offline competitions.
Toto (officially stylised as TOTO) is a legalised form of lottery sold in Singapore by the Singapore Pools. It is the second most popular type of gambling activity in the country after 4-Digits. Profits from the games are channelled back to the governing body, the Singapore Totaliser Board, which uses the funds for charity and other worthy causes.
At a star-studded event in Singapore, Britain’s Prince William unveiled the 2023 winners of the Earthshot Prize — solutions ranging from solar-powered dryers to combating food waste to making electric car batteries more environmentally friendly. The prize ceremony was the third time that Prince William has awarded the accolade and it was the first time it was held in Asia. Actors Cate Blanchett, Donnie Yen and Lana Condor walked the green carpet alongside William as they presented the prizes.
In line with the sustainability theme of this year’s award, the stars wore outfits that were either repurposed from previous occasions or made from sustainable materials. The prince wore a dark green velour suit from Alexander McQueen while host Hannah Waddingham donned a long black sparkling ball gown with an over-sized poppy as a mark of respect for the war dead. Other celebrities who walked the green carpet included South African actor Nomzano Mbatha and Australian wildlife conservationist Robert Irwin, who presented an award for companies that help protect species. The prince said the solutions he saw at this year’s awards show showed that “hope remains” as the planet faces threats such as climate change and illegal trade in wildlife products. The awards were televised live across the world on Tuesday. Those who were selected as finalists for the prize were given grants of up to $1 million to further develop their ideas. Those who were selected as winners received up to $5 million in cash and other resources. The winners were chosen by a jury of scientists and business leaders from around the world.
