The Sidney Prize is an award granted by the Hillman Foundation each month to honor journalists for outstanding socially conscious reporting that fosters economic justice. The prize is named for Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America president Sidney Hillman, who fought for a better American life through the union movement. It has been awarded since 1950. Past winners have included Jane Mayer for her work on the abuses of the Bush administration and Bill Moyers for his series on corporations that have manipulated the environment. The Hertz Fellows whose service has helped build the Hertz community also are eligible for the Sidney Prize.

The University of Sydney offers an array of prizes to students in a number of disciplines. Most of these require the submission of an essay, poem or short story in a specific category. In most cases the entries are judged by a panel and the winner is announced at an awards ceremony or in a published journal. Most of the prizes have a history that stretches back to bequests received in the early part of the 20th century. The University of Sydney literary prizes are given in the name of people who have made significant contributions to society and the arts.
