The HKU Endacott Prize for History and Culture

In 2022/23, Hong Kong racing offers a record total prize money of HK$167.2 million, backed by the Club’s long-term strategy to provide the right incentives for owners. This includes a major increase in prize money for both distance races and the introduction of a bonus system. It is expected that this will help to attract world-class horses and encourage them to stay in the territory, thus contributing to maintaining Hong Kong’s global reputation for quality horseracing.

The winners of the 8th Inter-school Competition of Study Projects on Hong Kong History and Culture, organised by the Museum of History and the Hong Kong Institute for Promotion of Chinese Culture, were announced today (September 25). Students from the following schools won merit awards:

This year, the prize commemorates Professor George B. Endacott, who re-established the Department of History as a respectable field of research at HKU in 1946. The prize is intended to reward students who excel in history and research in the broad area of Hong Kong history, including the relationship between historical developments and changes in society.

American lawmakers have urged Beijing to release Hong Kong democracy activists detained under China’s national security law. The legislators also called on the Hong Kong government to grant freedom of expression to those who advocate peaceful dissent. They said that the law’s encroachment on freedom of speech was damaging to the city’s image and economy.

HKU historians Ghassan Moazzin and Charles Schencking have been elected Corresponding Fellows of the Australian Academy of the Humanities, a high-level fellowship for outstanding scholars in the humanities. This is the first time that HKU staff have been awarded this honour, and it is an extremely proud moment for us all.
