What is Data SGP?

Data sgp is a collection of aggregated student achievement and learning data that can be used by teachers and researchers to better understand the progression of students over time. This data includes both individual level measures like test scores and growth percentiles as well as aggregated student data at a school/district level such as class size, attendance rates, graduation rates and more. This information can be utilized to improve classroom practices, evaluate schools/districts, and support broader research initiatives.

There are two common formats for longitudinal (time dependent) student assessment data: WIDE and LONG. WIDE format data is structured such that each case/row represents a unique student and columns represent variables associated with the student at different times. In contrast, the LONG format organizes data for a single student such that time dependent data is spread out across multiple rows in the dataset. The SGPdata package, installed when one installs the SGP software, includes exemplar WIDE and LONG data sets (sgpData and sgpData_LONG) to assist users in setting up their own longitudinal data set.

The most important factor in interpreting student growth data is the context that is provided. In order to know whether a student’s growth is a result of teacher influence or just the fact that they are in a higher performing cohort, it is necessary to know which percentage of students in their grade level class is making adequate progress. To do this, we need to have baseline-referenced Student Growth Profiles (SGPs) – SGPs that compare students’ current year growth with their prior year’s scale score.

Baseline-referenced SGPs can be more difficult to interpret than their cohort-referenced counterparts because they require at least three years of stable assessments in order to produce a model that can be compared with prior year scale scores. Additionally, correlations between baseline SGPs and prior year scale scores likely won’t be exactly zero, introducing substantial bias into interpretation of the results.

To ensure that the interpretation of student growth data is as accurate as possible, it is essential that teachers have access to all relevant information about their students. In addition to being able to view all available student-level data, teachers need to have the ability to analyze this information in terms of the classroom and school context in which their students learn. This will allow them to make more informed instructional decisions about how best to support student learning.

The SGP software makes this type of data readily accessible for educators to use for classroom instruction and evaluation. However, the aggregation of this data into a single repository can be overwhelming for those who do not have access to the technical knowledge or expertise needed to create and use such a system. As a result, many schools have not yet fully embraced the power of data sgp to inform their educational decision making processes. However, as more educators adopt this technology, the educational landscape is sure to change dramatically. This is especially true for those districts that implement a comprehensive, high quality framework for professional development and instructional reform.
